Overview
WASH
In addition to advocating for sustainable WASH services based on the human rights to water and sanitation, SDC promotes policy dialogue, fair water governance, and innovative partnerships to ensure vulnerable people are not left behind.
Integrated Water Resources Management
Using the IWRM approach, SDC promotes solutions that address root causes of mismanagement and misuse of water. The goal is to ensure fair and efficient water distribution for people, agriculture, nature, and industry, to prevent conflicts and turn tensions into opportunities for dialogue.
Water economy and social entrepreneurship
SDC’s long-term commitment in supporting the concept of water footprint, at implementation level and conceptually, has led to many successful projects on entrepreneurship and circular economy
Youth as actors of change and societal transformation
The major challenges threatening a water secure future require an active involvement of youth at all levels and in all spheres. SDC fosters youth's involvement by enhancing their voice and relevance in policy dialogue and by recognizing their role as agents of change
Water Stewardship – holding the private sector accountable
SDC supports the Water Stewardship approach - which aims at making sure that the use of water is socially and culturally equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically beneficial.
The gender dimension in water - a matter of equality
Gender inequality is one of the greatest obstacles to sustainable social, societal and economic development, economic growth, and hampering poverty reduction. The SDC is helping to ensure that women and men have the same rights and opportunities to develop their potential and can use their resources in a meaningful way. This also applies to water where women are highly disadvantaged and often carrying the bulk part of the burden to ensure water for households.
Water Diplomacy
The demand for fresh water is announced to exceed availability by 40% in 2030 already. The correspondingly increased competition over water resources holds the potential for (unpredictable) tensions and conflicts in delicate contexts. The Blue Peace Initiative (BPI) wants to enhance water cooperation across borders, sectors and generations in order to foster peaceful, cohesive, and sustainable societies. RésEAU supports regional water networks in Central Asia and the Middle East where the BPI is very active.
